Users will soon have a fresh option that allows them to reduce the quantity of AI-created media appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the service announced that it now features more than 1 bn content made with AI.
Testing and Rollout
The new functionality is undergoing trials over the following weeks before a global launch. This development coincides with a surge in AI content, driven by recent video-generation tools.
AI Content on Other Platforms
Recent reports that almost a tenth of the most rapidly expanding video streams on a popular video site exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A significant portion of this output is considered low-quality AI content, a phrase for substandard, bulk-generated content that is frequently absurd or bizarre.
Our research shows that a lot of users like content made with AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to educational videos, and we want to provide users the power to adjust the amount of that, according to their own preferences,” commented a company executive.
Scale of AI Content
The platform announced that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its network labeled as made with AI. Overall, more than 100 mn videos are added to the service each day, making AI-generated material a minor part of its complete catalog.
User Control Features
Users will be able to decrease or raise the amount of AI content they see by opening the topic control option in the application and picking AI-made media. Additional categories that can already be controlled under the filter encompass current affairs, fashion, aesthetics, and dance.
AI Disclosure Rules
Its guidelines oblige creators to identify “realistic” AI-made content, and it forbids dangerous fake videos of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any realistic AI video that is unmarked can be deleted under its community policies.
Additionally, the platform will henceforth attach an “AI-made” label to content created with its proprietary AI systems, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This measure is designed to help prevent users from attempting to bypass the disclosure requirement.
Educational Initiatives
The company is also launching a $2m AI literacy fund for experts and groups to produce learning resources about responsible artificial intelligence. This program will support charitable organizations dedicated to educating coding and technology.
Moderation Strategy
The video-sharing app has supported its content review process, following debate over proposals to lay off a large number of review team members in the UK. The company is planning to reduce hundreds of positions in its trust and safety team in London, with worker representatives and online safety experts expressing worry that staff are being displaced by automated systems.
A senior executive explained that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but automated tools can protect employees by filtering out the most distressing content ahead of it has to be seen by staff. TikTok reported a 76% decrease in shocking and graphic content handled by human moderators over the last 12 months due to the use of its machine learning processes.
“We think that it’s essential to integrate humans and technology to ensure user safety,” she said. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we also think it’s highly necessary to reduce exposure to unsafe media as rapidly, which is why a lot of the machine support is making a difference work at speed.”
